Custom Wine Cellar Orange County CTO LogoContemporary wine cellars are known for clean lines, efficient storage, and modern materials. They sometimes lack elaborate and maximalist styles that you might find in more traditional wine cellars.

When designing a wine cellar for a lovely home in peaceful Ansley Park, Atlanta, our partners at CustomWineCellar.com wanted to incorporate modern design while maintaining the home’s interior’s warmth, hospitality, and glow. To achieve this, they created a modern wine room design with a more contemporary style, blending traditional and modern elements.

From Bath to Bar: A Contemporary Wine Cellar

These contemporary wine cellars in a residential space in Ansley Park, Atlanta bring warm and modern vibes to the whole custom wine cellar design

What it Takes to Build These Stunning Contemporary Wine Cellars

This home wine cellar’s modern and contemporary design creates a gentle and peaceful atmosphere. This style can make you feel at home and relaxed when reaching for a bottle of wine. This cellar is between the family room and the formal dining area, making it a convenient spot to access wine for any occasion.

The small room was previously a powder room with a sliding door tucked under the stairs, resulting in an irregular ceiling and shape. Using traditional design in a relatively compact space could make it feel smaller and more cramped. On the other hand, the clean lines, surfaces, and patterns of modern design can help preserve the space’s size or even make it feel bigger.

Stylish Black-Framed Glass Wine Cellar Door

A single glass door with black metal framing welcomes guests into this lovely wine cellar. The glass panel is dual-paned, which means it comprises two glass panels sandwiching a “spacer,” typically argon gas, to enhance its insulation capabilities.

The door has a 24-inch metal handle for easy gripping when entering or leaving the cellar. For security, it features a manual lock and key system and a separate magnetic lock to ensure that the door is tightly closed when not in use.

When renovating wine cellars, not all of them replace the flooring. Some may add more insulation while keeping the same materials. We chose a different wood shade for the floor to make our wine cellar stand out from the adjacent room.

We repurposed wine barrels, specifically the staves, by flattening and resurfacing them and then used them to line the floor. Some planks still show the marks from the staves, adding extra character to the room!

Contemporary Approach to Wine Racking Design for this Ansley Park, Atlanta Home

Wine Cellar Designed by Experts

This unique wine cellar under stairs has five walls. To make the most of the small space, we installed custom wine racks on all sides with a unique twist! We used a combination of different types of racks made of wood or metal to add variety to the display.

Wooden racks are not only for traditional wine cellars; they also look great in modern ones. We installed four wooden wine racks in this wine room, each on one wall.

Unique Tequila Wall Designed for Wine Lovers and Guests

As you enter the modern wine cellar, you will notice the “tequila wall” on your left. This special section is dedicated to tequila and features a custom-made white oak wine rack.

The tequila wall is not your typical shelf—it includes unconventional individual shelves and a middle section with a custom-built acrylic LED panel to illuminate the bottles from below. To enhance the shelf’s appearance, we also created channels for LED ribbon lights by cutting about ½ inches into the wood, which beautifully accentuates the wood’s rich color.

Contemporary Wine Cellars: The Main Wine Wall and Tools Rack

Detailed Features fo Home Contemporary Wine Cellars in Ansley Park, Atlanta

The main wine wall is next to the tequila wall of these contemporary wine cellars. It has four rows that slightly tilt and display the wine bottles. The top section of the rack has crate storage of various sizes and shapes, and wine bottles are currently stored upright. The bottom section has deep horizontal storage spaces for storing bottles with the cork facing forward.

Next to the main wine wall is a half-wall-height wooden rack designed for holding decanters and glass stemware. There is plenty of counter space for the owners to safely and comfortably pour a glass of wine. Like all the other wooden racks in this cellar, the tools rack is also made from lacquer-polished white rifted oak.

Opposite the tool racks, you will find our custom-made wine rack, which also serves as a cover for the cooling unit. This rack is situated directly beneath the staircase, so its height is shorter than the other wooden wine racks. Four rows of deep horizontal racks store wine bottles with the cork facing forward. Below these rows is a wooden louvered grill that allows cool air from the refrigeration unit to pass through easily.

Dazzling LED Lights for these Metal Wine Racks

We installed 17 rows of VintageView’s Vino Rails for the metal wine cellar racks in the Ansley Park, Atlanta home. These rows are placed a few inches in front of a white stone wall and are lined up in four columns, grouped by twos.

The metal racks are attached to metal posts fixed onto the floor and ceiling at the ends. To add some personality to this side of the display, we attached cool-toned LED wine cellar lighting at the back of the metal posts, giving a subtle glow. The metal racking display looks stunning from the outside (and through the glass door)!

Metal Racks on the Ceiling?

Here’s an interesting feature you rarely see in typical wine cellars—racks on the ceiling! To match the stylish, contemporary interiors, we added tiling work on the ceiling, including the surface beneath the stairs.

We thought it would be even more fascinating to display some bottles on it, so we fixed individual metal bottle holders on the tiles!

Installing Modern Split-Type Cooling Units for Modern Wine Cellars

We decided that a ductless split-type cooling system was the best option for our small wine cellar, as it didn’t have much wall space. We installed the US Cellars Systems RM4600 wine cellar cooling unit, in which the condenser is connected to the evaporator via a coil.

The coil runs up to the attic, where we placed the condensing unit. In conjunction with the cellar’s insulation, this powerful cooling unit will keep all the wines fresh and of high quality.
