The Concept Behind These Custom Under Stair Wine Cellars
The homeowner, a lawyer, loves traditional and rustic aesthetics. He wanted to maintain this classic and cozy atmosphere throughout his house, including his custom home wine cellar in Alpharetta, Atlanta.
He wished for a blend of timeless charm with a modern twist for his wine collection. He found the perfect spot for his wine cellar under his open-well staircase. Our team visited his home, assessed the situation by carefully examining the space, and partially demolished the walls to develop a concept design.
Designing under-the-stairs wine cellars is more challenging compared to open wine walls. There are several reasons for this, including:
– Ensuring that the staircase is stable and secure.
– Additional framing work may be necessary.
– Uncovering potential unforeseen issues behind walls after demolition.
– Ensuring that the wine cellar design is structurally sound, considering the weight of the wine collection and the staircase.
– Finding the best location for the cooling unit within the limited space.
– Managing the non-standard slope of the ceiling.
Our team is well-equipped to overcome the challenges and fulfill the wine cellar project that meets the client’s vision while integrating with the existing structure.
Captivating Wine Racking and Glass Wine Cellar Door Design
Collaborating with wine cellar contractors in Atlanta requires two key objectives: creating a structurally sound and fully functional wine cellar while ensuring its aesthetic appeal.
These principles are evident in the design of the wine racks, doors, and windows of this wine cellar.
On the right side of the partially glass wine cellar, facing the staircase and living room, you’ll notice a captivating “peek-a-boo” window.
The window features an arched shape and is made of dual-paned, tempered glass encased within an alder wood frame. Standing in front of the window, you’ll be treated to a beautifully framed view of the wine cellar’s racking and collection, resembling a piece of artwork.
The front side of the wine cellar has a generously sized glass door crafted with dual-paned glass and an alder wood frame. The wood framing incorporates laminated veneer lumber (LVL), renowned for its resistance to moisture and warping. The team paid meticulous attention to the door, even installing an automatic lock at the bottom. The lever rises when the door is opened and securely lowers when the door is closed.
The incorporation of glass elements within the wine cellar sets it apart, allowing for mesmerizing glimpses of the interior. Whether you’re in the hallway, living room, or ascending the stairs, the allure of the wine cellar captivates your attention.
Stylish Features of this Wooden Wine Racks in Alpharetta, Atlanta
The owner’s wine collection was carefully organized in a custom wooden wine rack display. Unlike other under-the-stairs wine cellars that typically use cork-forward storage to maximize space, this wine cellar expert team in Atlanta incorporated various storage configurations to create a unique and exciting look, as desired by the owner.
On the top section of the racking, you will find the traditional 750ml storage units that display bottles with cork-forward orientation. Below that, open storage spaces are currently being used to store books.
In the middle section, a row with LED strips was installed and cleverly concealed by a light valance.
Towards the bottom, lattice X-cubes and horizontal lattice displays were added to accommodate additional bottles.
Additionally, case storage was incorporated to store boxes and larger-sized bottles. A column of horizontal display shelves was installed facing the doorway on the leftmost side of the racking.
Overall, this wooden wine racks rack can hold up to 405 bottles, with an additional 100 bottles accommodated through crate storage. It is a bright and minimalist idea for a small custom wine cellar!

Installation of the Cooling System for this Atlanta Custom Wine Cellar
The living room and kitchen are usually spacious enough to accommodate through-the-wall cooling systems. However, the spaces underneath staircases are not designed to have such systems.
The ceiling has limited or no air space, the walls have insufficient extra space, and the door has no space for storage.
Despite these challenges, the team created a fully refrigerated wine cellar underneath a staircase in a traditional home. They found a small space beneath the staircase, just enough to accommodate the coils and evaporator.
To install the cooling system, the team had to demolish the walls to gain access to this compact area.
A split-system cooling unit was used, where the condenser was housed in a separate machine. This condenser, measuring about 30×30 inches, was affectionately called a “doghouse.”
The condenser was designed to optimize airflow and constructed using exterior-grade materials, ensuring it could withstand various elements such as heat, wind, and rain while protecting the condenser. They opted for this split system to avoid any visible obtrusive cooling system.
With these innovative measures, the custom residential wine cellar remains fully refrigerated while maintaining a clean and unobstructed appearance.
Thick Insulation for Enhancing the Humidity
After completing the electrical work, we applied a 4-inch layer of closed-cell foam insulation on all the walls. This insulation was essential in preventing moisture from entering the wine cellar.
Usually, in spaces with floating floors, insulation is added beneath the floorboards to seal any gaps and further enhance insulation effectively. However, in this wine cellar, the concrete floor had a design that matched the rest of the house, eliminating the need for additional insulation.
